É um tipo de metal leve, macio e resistente. É o segundo metal mais maleável, sendo o primeiro o ouro, e o sexto mais dúctil.
The main application of zinc - 50% of the annual consumption - is in the galvanization of iron or steel to protect them from corrosion, being used as a sacrificial material.
Another common use of this metal is in the construction industry, particularly for cladding and roofing. Grayish in color, there are also sheets with other colors, called pigments. The best known example in Portugal of a zinc roof is the Atlantic Pavillion in Lisbon.
